Coach Chris Davis was keen to play a team from a division higher to set the benchmark and see how the team faired against division three opposition and Otliensians currently mid table travelled to Warley to find the Vandals in good form and made that step up with confidence and played some good attractive rugby with a powerful forward display and some fine running rugby.
Vandals were the first to trouble the scorers with a well struck penalty from wide out by Knapping going over the bar off the upright to give the Vandals a three nil lead.
Andy Irvine was the next to score finishing a good move going round the winger to score under the posts with Knapping converting to bring the score to ten nil.
Tinkwell the powerful running Otley centre then scored the first points for Ensians with powerful running and a well deserved try, converted to bring the game to ten points to seven.
Vandals forwards then started to turn the screw in the scrums which eventually saw Ensians play the no front row forward card and opted for passive scrummaging, this seemed to spur the Warley forwards on even more and started to play the aggressive driving rugby the home supporters have come to enjoy this season. The front row of Murray,Friend and Swiffen were more prominent around the park running with ball in hand, supporting and hitting the rucks and mauls with more pace and vigour allowing the backs more space with the quicker ball to experiment and try the moves coach Davis has been working on.Paul Knapping was the next scorer going over the line wide out following good interplay by the second row of Andy White and Andy Hoyle
The conversion slid wide leaving the score at fifteen, seven.Mark Kazmeirski then scored a typical Kaz try picking up at the base of a ruck from well presented quick ball driven over the line by the whole of the back row of Lawrie,Sim and Richardson.
Knapping’s simple conversion bringing the scoreline to a well deserved lead of twenty two points to seven.
Ensians Tinkwell then showed his strong running to round the Vandals defence scoring his second converted try with the game turning round at half time with Vandals having a well deserved lead of 22-14.
The second half saw the Vandals backs playing up the slope running the ball at every opportunity with Fox playing at stand off and Knapping partnering new signing Gordon Farrar in the centre looking to expand the game keeping Ensians living on scraps ,following a good move involving Hoyle,White and Richardson the ball came back to Brett Swiffen who crashed over the line with would be tacklers hanging on but not able to stop the try,Knapping knocked over the conversion .
With the game at 29-14 Tinkwell scored his hat trick try again showing his power and pace bringing Ensians to within ten points of the Vandals .
Matt Farrar then made a fine probing run from fullback involving Jim Crowther taking the ball to within ten metres of the line,Ensians scrambled the ball into touch but from the lineout Craig Sim who covered and tackled well all afternoon took the ball clean and the well rehearsed move saw him driven over the line with Aussie Elliot coming up with the spoils to finish the scoring and Vandals winning the game 34 points to 19.
