James Wainwright appointed head coach for the 2022/23 season

Halifax Vandals are delighted to confirm the appointment of James Wainwright as their new head coach.

Wainwright, who is better known as Jammy is rugby circles, makes the switch after a long and successful playing career at Old Crossleyans.

Jammy made more than 400 1st XV appearances for Crocs, including three seasons as captain, and his versatility saw him turn out on the wing, scrum-half and in the back row.

Jammy is looking to add to his back room team in the coming weeks, but will be supported by club president Chris Davis and newly-appointed director of rugby Tony Curtis.

Jammy replaces Kevin McCallion and Davis at the helm, with the duo having stepped down last season, and he has set his sights on building on their foundations.

“The club has got a strong pack and set-piece so that’s is a good starting point,” he said. “However I want us to be more expansive once we’ve got the ball in hand.

“To do that, we’ll need to get fitter and improve behind the scrum.

“I want us to be aiming for the top four and a good cup run, but mainly I want to get lads enjoying it. They give up their time to train and play, so winning is one thing, but they’ve got to enjoy it.”

The club are planning to host a “Meet The Coach” night on Thursday June 30, with pre-season training getting underway on Tuesday July 5. All players welcome.

Wainwright is looking to lead the team out for a couple of preseason friendlies before the season kicks off on Saturday September 3.
