Ben Burnside confirmed 1st XV captain for the 2022/23 season

Halifax Vandals are delighted to confirm the appointment of Ben Burnside as their 1st XV captain for the new season.

Burnside replaces Paul Jowett as skipper, with ‘Jow’ having opted to stepped down at the end of the season due to work and family commitments.

Burnside has been a key member of the Vandals pack over the years - although the combination of a serious knee injury and the Covid pandemic meant that he had three years on the sidelines.

He made an impressive return to action this season, though, making 13 appearances and tormenting front rows across the league.

Burnside is looking to form a senior leadership team to help support him over the season - with further announcements set to follow.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to get stuck in and help keep the club move forward,” said Burnside.

Director of rugby Tony Curtis added: “First off the club would like to thank Jow for his record-breaking stint as skipper. He left everything out on the pitch and was instrumental in the club’s back-to-back promotions, as well as stepping into support with the coaching. He is a true Vandals legend.

“Moving forward, we feel Ben is the ideal candidate to lead the club. He is a popular character in the changing rooms, has a good rugby brain and will lead by example on the pitch.”
